Loving Myself

I could talk for a long time about the importance kimono plays in my life. But the key point is that kimono is what made me love myself. Kimono allowed me to finally be ME. I can’t separate ‘Ara’ from kimono anymore.

Kimono to me is art.

A canvas you can put on your body and put good energy and fun out into the world. And it truly is for everyone. You like tradition and culture? Kimono has that. You like mixing and matching fashion from around the world to express yourself? Kimono has that. You wanna make people smile and be filled with wonder when you walk by? You wanna get creative and make your own clothes? Go for it! Kimono has that too!

I never really truly felt like myself until I started wearing, choosing, and making kimono on my own. And I hope that in wearing them openly it inspires others to find their kimono self too.

Deep Appreciation

I, like many a “weeb,” got into manga and anime in my childhood, but for me it grew into appreciation of the language and from there I studied the culture! I thought kimono were just so gorgeous and all the history and nuance behind them so fascinating! I started collecting at 16 and, through many hard years of research (this was early aughts, so far less readily available online than now!), I learned my best how to wear them and found them a lot of fun! It’s a great hobby and I’ve gained a lot of friends through it.

Kimono has been my own form of artistic expression.

Learning the rules of coordination made me more skilled in breaking them. It has lead to me coming into my own style. Kimono is comfortable. It literally means “a thing to wear.” I do not see it as some mystical, sacred garment. I see it as another way to feel comfortable in my own skin.

I wear kimono when I go to kimono classes or for events where kimono is either required or it suits the venue. I wear kimono because it is comfortable. I also wear kimono to practice and to improve my skills to help share kimono dressing with others.

To me, kimono is the intersection of everything I love

Art, embroidery, the drive to accomplish a great goal, endless hours the artists put into making something, Japanese culture, motifs and what they mean, and I can wear it! It makes me feel beautiful, and I feel happy I’ve chosen to wear something I know someone put their time into, it is important to me to wear and own items that reflect a human’s touch- less fast fashion. I wear kimono because I can express myself and the art of others, and it’s also just awesome to wear. I love that it takes time to learn, and I enjoy the difficulty in dressing and choosing what to coordinate.
